Homeschool Program

There are many ways to do homeschool. For our family it has been so enriching to have days at home and days at a school that support our alternative views of education. Our program was born out of the desire to give an alternative option to our rapidly growing homeschool community in the Georgetown and surrounding areas.

Program Description

We are a 2 Day a week Drop-Off Homeschool Enrichment Program meeting on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9-3.

The nourishment of the body and emotions are just as important to us as the nourishment of the mind. When a child feels at ease emotionally and nourished physically, the possibilities for learning are endless.

We are inspired by RIE (www.rie.org), Non-Violent Communication (http://www.teachingfromyourheart.org/#order), Sociocracy (https://www.sociocracyforall.org/lets-decide-together/) and many others advocating for respectful communication with children.

Slow, Mindful and Connected: In a world of fast paced productivity we desire to cultivate a slower way of life…one that breathes and makes room for rest and enjoyment, the natural rhythms of nature, the changing of the seasons, the appreciation of the natural world around us and the simple joys of life. We want to create an environment that makes room for thinking, feeling, building deep relationships and connections and lots of organic creativity.

Respect Children’s Rights as Humans: Children are whole people right now, and should be afforded the rights and respect that all humans deserve. What does this mean? For us, it means that we mindfully think about how we are speaking to and treating children, ensuring that we are treating them in the exact way that we would want to be treated.

Self Directed Learning: We trust that children are biologically driven to learn and incredibly motivated, curious and creative. We want to honor, preserve and protect that curiosity by providing a safe space for children to exercise their independence, follow their interests, and help build the school they want. They will be active participants in their learning journey by deciding what they want to be learning, creating and amending rules, forming school committees and activities, planning field trips & events and other essential parts of running a school.

We want to provide a space for children to confidently know that we honor their voice, opinions, ideas and perspectives!!

Sociocratic Circles: Through Sociocratic (different from Socratic) Circles, every learner will get an opportunity to voice their opinions, thoughts and ideas about the inner-workings of the school.

(In Sociocratic circles every voice is heard. It is not based on majority rule. What tends to happen in a majority rule setting is minority voices or people who are not as outspoken or bold tend to get pushed aside. We find this method really helpful, because it allows for every voice and facilitates healthy dialogue and conflict resolution, which are skills that are so important for every human!!)

Project Based/Multi-Age Learning: Something truly magical happens in Project- Based learning. The learners initiate, direct and manage projects together. The mentor makes observations, supports, takes notes, photographs, and helps them work through disagreements, settle arguments and create systems so plans are not forgotten.

(In life, subjects aren’t separated, they organically blend together. Through project based learning and child-led education, learners are able to deep dive into subjects that really interest them, all the while learning everything from math to science to reading.)

Curriculum

Our learners are the curriculum, and their interests will always be our main priority! With that said, we are so inspired by the richness of the world around us and will have the opportunity to deep dive into some really exciting topics together!
We are inspired by Charlotte Mason, Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Unschooling and others supporting an education that inspires, enriches and allows space for the learner to follow what gives them the deepest joy.

Here are some things that inspire us:

  • Nature Exploration, Herbal Studies, Gardening & Botany- Nature Walks, Observation/ Nature Journaling, Plant Identification

  • Cooking/Baking – every week our learners will get the opportunity to prepare nutrient dense food for the community

  • Rich Literature and Poetry – chapter books, picture books, classical and modern literature, myths and fables, poetry memorization and recitation

  • Art History, Artists Study and lots of hands on creativity

  • Science – learn science by doing science, story-like format, visit museums, read
    biographies, labs, journaling

  • History – immersive experience and interdisciplinary learning

  • Philosophy and Ethics – curiously explore ideas together

  • Music – history and composer study

  • Reading/Writing – nature-inspired, hands-on curriculum that gives children a strong
foundation in phonics, reading, and writing skills

  • Math – aim to help the learner develop a deep understanding of math concepts,
proficiency and fluency with fundamental skills and lots of learning math through
    games

  • Seasonal and Global Celebrations

I wonder what inspires your learners? We are excited to find out!!

Multiple Teachers: we will bring in many different speakers throughout the year who are passionate about their subjects! (artists, chefs, architects, carpenters, musicians, herbalists………)

Measure Progress: through goal-setting, creating portfolios, art shows, writing books, entrepreneurship, building projects, child-led theater productions etc, our kids will feel very proud of their work and showcase it in the way that they choose

There is no separation from the learning that happens at home and in a school environment, therefore we welcome your thoughts and ideas always. There are many opportunities to get involved!

Childhood is not a race to see how quickly a child can read, write and count. It is a small window of time to learn and develop at the pace that is right for each individual child. Earlier is not better.
